PASS THROUGH
presented by Pexstret Dance Theatre, Soo D Art & Co

Pexstret Liu Yong Sean, a well-known dancer/choreographer together with Korean dance company, Soo d Art & Co's as well as artistic director, Soodong Jung will be performing the show, concentrating the essence of five works into a superb performance. is adept at creating and presenting relationships and emotional exchanges to audience.

1. Terminal 2 (Group Performance)

People subject to endless replacement. Where is their self-recognition headed? Never-ending inversion of common sense, nonsense, usual and unusual days. The work deals with self-recognition of humans in the modern civilization that are full with uncertainty and indeterminacy. Curve lines are applied to movements and objects to express images of circulation and repetition.
Choreographed by Sudong Jung

Performed by Boram Jun, Heong Yeun Ko and Soodong Jung

2. Into Thin Air (Solo)

This piece observes how humans control their breathing, how breathing controls muscles, and how breathing affects every movement and emotion. The Korean traditional dance "Sum-Breath" is used as a research basis to control the body and stimulate the movement and emotions of the muscles

Choreographed & performed by Pexstret Liu

3. Undammed (Solo)

'Undammed' is a creation inspired by Soodong Jung and Boram Jun. This piece was originally choreographed by Soodong but this time, the  concept of re-creation aims to present freedom and unrestrained appearance of water to allow audiences experience a fresh feel of enjoyment. The same work that enables female dancers to re-interpret it regardless of the difference in gender, control of strength, or the difference of thought. Therefore, this work presents the posture and process of a man unrestrained circumstances, reviewing the most primitive language.

Choreographer originally by Soodong Jung

Recreated and performed by Boram Jun

4. I am Not Alone (Duet)

None of any living creature is ever alone, even for microorganisms. Breeding, a norm and common practice for continual existence, is happening everywhere. We explore and seek to develop a unique set of the surviving pattern. And with the strong will to stay alive, we evolve to maintain our place in the life chain. Expressed mainly with contemporary dance performance focusing on how one survives in this universe is presented by Pextret Liu, who has been trained and performed in Korea for over 10 years, and Tze Shen, one of the young rising stars trained in Hong Kong.

5. PASS THROUGH

Through movements and body communication, we create an exchange in language even with different backgrounds and cultures.

Performed by Pexstret Liu Yong Sean, Tze Shen Ong, Soodong Jung, Heong Yeun Ko

presented by Anomalist Production

Born and bred in rural FELDA, Azim, is an SPM student at SMK Seri Serting. Both parents are illiterate and only possess the knowledge and skills for rubber tapping as a means of survival. As kindness and understanding are in Azim’s nature, he helps his father tap rubber every morning. Azim has a love for reading and acquiring more knowledge however he can and because of it, he has a deep curiosity about the world outside FELDA. But without financial independence, it would only remain a dream.

What Azim and the rest of SMK Seri Serting didn’t know was that their lives were about to change. An old lady named Mary, a teacher known for teaching in only the elite schools her entire teaching career in the city would come waltzing into the grounds of SMK Seri Serting. Now, in her 50s, Mary decides it is time to make a difference knowing that English is one of the most failed subjects in these areas.

Despite her good intentions, the students at the school found her intolerable in the beginning mostly due to their different demographic and racial backgrounds. These students are going to sit for SPM at the end of the year and the clock is ticking for results to show from Mary but Mary can’t just teach them English when none of them understands the language at all. Through English, Mary tries to bond with her students by teaching them about life, tolerance, friendship, trust and sacrifice.

With all the complications, different stands on what is considered correct methods, different backgrounds and more complications in such a small village; will Mary alter the school’s faculty and students perspective on education? Will the students pass their SPM? Will Azim ever break out from FELDA to pursue something bigger?

Synopsis
The Vine is planted and nurtured by our loving teachers and hard-working students. In just a few months, the most important fruits - love, joy, patience, and many more - have grown, and you are invited to harvest them.

Scene 1.Love
Teaching the students to treat one another kindly and be willing to give. They are encouraged to lend a helping hand to those in need and all our dear teachers also bear this kind of loving spirit to act as a good example.

Scene 2. Joy
Dancing Ballet can always bring us joy and a sense of satisfaction, because we devote our emotion into the music as well as movements. During our dance, we become exhilarated and get totally absorbed into the dance.

Scene 3.Patience
Patience and endurance are the qualities that all dancers must possess. It demands long period of tough training to become a good dancers. Dancers may even get hurt due to vigorous practice and the more composed they need to be during such difficult time. When you are having competition, you should focus on the process and interaction with other dancers. Be humble when you are the winner and stay persevering even you lose.

Scene 4. Goodness
Children are cherished as they are pure and innocent. Most of our students have started dancing since a very young age. Under the nourishment of our teachers, we hope each of them continue to thrive while bearing an innocent heart.

Scene 5  Gentleness
Tender and humble is the attitude we should bear, only compassion will allow us to accept the unlovable people. Moreover, it is because of sympathy that we can understand others growing pain and not to be get irritated easily. All of the said qualities are what a mature person should present, and our loving Jesus Christ is the exact prototype for us to learn from.

Scene 6.  Faithfulness
Faith is one of the important factors that will affect a dancer’s performance. Therefore, we encourage our students to step onto the stage with faith as this is utmost important. Besides, uniting all teachers and students, advocating the spirit of faith is always the vision of our school. As God always showers us with immense grace and blessings, hence the flag resembling the glory of our King Jesus Christ will be hoisted during the 10thAnniversary performance.

Scene 7.  Peace
Both our physical body and soul need peace. To ensure our student’s limbs which are their great assets are well protected, our school provides the best facilities. Besides, all teachers stay attentive to the students’ emotion status, giving them care and comfort, in order to help students feel relieved and focus on their training.

Scene 8.  Self-Control
The world is now overflowing with wide array of seduction and distraction. Many youngsters thereforeindulge in materials, delicacy, computer games, sex etc. There is a sink in morality as bad competition, stripping of authority; lying and gossiping are very common nowadays. Our school teachers understand the students are still young and fresh, sometimes it may be difficult for them to distinct good and bad, we therefore strive hard to emphasize on moral training, helping our students to retain self-control.

Scene 9 Kindness
Parents should instill the quality of kindness to their children. We should treat others kindly, refuse to be calculating, willing to care for those in needs, bear a kind heart, speak positively and do good deeds.

About the Show

How long has it been since you heard your inner voice? In a world of similar to kaleidoscope, people often lose their way and forget to listen to their inner voice. Studies in recent years shows that the global suicide rate has risen sharply. Alternatively, modern neuro-immunology also states that "the spiritual factors can produce an automatic immunity and self-healing power. This function is an instinct for the human body to adapt to the natural environment," and the healing music is able to calm the spirit through ascension effect. In addition, the oriental and western symphony concert this time, "Spectrum" also invites Muhardiman Ismail (Mohar), who is talented at creating healing music, to bring forward his 10 years of long composition, the "Getaran Alam", which carries peaceful music to audiences.

If nature is a piece of poem, no words could describe how interesting it can be. If nature is a song, then it will awake the happiness of hearts. If nature is a painting, then even the best pen and ink cannot describe the beauty that can be seen everywhere.

The bamboo flute is an instrument that can uplift people to paradise through its melodious, delicate, gentle and beautiful sound. The internationally renowned flute player, Muhardiman Ismail is good at creating healing music together with his partner, a rebana player Ramli Hamid (stage name Ramli Rebana) with more than 10 years of research.

Confucianism states that "the beginning of sound is born at the heart, the movement of the heart, the things and feelings that are moving to shape it." The true meaning of music lies within the voice of heart, love and peace. This whole process from making of the bamboo flute to the composition and performance are all arranged by Mohar himself. “Started from nature and returning back to nature” is his main axis and understanding towards the true meaning of music. He believes that music created by heart will surely touch the hearts of others. The bamboo flute he made by himself is like an angel's harp, which can help to calm people.

Modern neuro-immunology shows that "spiritual factors can produce auto-immune and self-healing powers. This function is an instinct for the human body to adapt to the natural environment," and healing music is able to calm the spirit through ascension effect. In the third performance, audiences get to experience a musical performance that can heal and touch people through the sound of Getaran Alam (the vibration of nature)!

About the Performer

Mohram is Malaysia’s first neoethnic duo comprising of flutist Muhardiman Ismail (Mohar) who plays the traditional Malay bamboo,"seruling", meanwhile percussionist Ramli Hamid (RamliRebana) plays the "rebana". These two instruments are considered the core and root for Malay music. Their music is brilliantly composed along with contemporary musical instruments that has created a new realm of music for the soul. Every songs from Mohram are powerful yet pure and gentle with soothing authentic sounds of Nusantara (Malay Archipelago).

A Program of KL International Arts Festival 2018 (DiverseCity)

“Spectrum” will be featuring different styles of music, allowing audiences to enjoy the authentic sound of every instruments across four consecutive nights. Besides, in order to achieve the highest level of auditory performance, "Spectrum" invites four groups of well-known performers in Malaysia to present a four night musical feast, enabling audiences to indulge from a classical and modern perspective to a symphonic oriental and western sense of music.

About the Show

Guzheng, a traditional plucked musical instrument that inherits for more than 2500 years.

"Poor life, just to find yourself", stated the performer, Sara Heng. Do not underestimate Sara based on her age for she recently has been a "treasure" in the music industry. She is well known as the new generation of Guzheng playing with full of momentum as well as her sweet and pleasing appearance when she plays Guzheng.

Sara received a scholarship to study Guzheng Musicology at Beijing four years ago and despite her well-being, she buries a mission of inheriting Guzheng music. The sound of the Guzheng can be beautiful like the creek of spring, and sorrowful like the orchids of the valley. However, the sound of the Guzheng is changeable, depending on the mood and feeling of the people who are playing, the Guzheng is a kind of melody that makes people feel deeply intoxicated.

This coming September, we invite you to experience different sounds of Guzheng, exploring musical possibilities, and finding inner strength through Guzheng.

About the Performer

Sara Heng completed her Guzheng master studies as a research student at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing under the tutelage of Associate Professor Ji Wei and auspices of the Beijing Government Scholarship after graduated with a degree in Guzheng at the same institution with full sponsorship from the China Scholarship Council. She actively participated in competitions and her achievements includes winning the gold medal for the musical instruments competition of conservatories in China. Sara performs internationally across Singapore, China, Japan, Korea and Cambodia.

SD: Romeo & Juliet
presented by KL SHAKESPEARE PLAYERS

Keeping to the SD format--performance of key scenes using Shakespeare's text, weaved together by narration in contemporary English--the shows make Shakespeare accessible, exciting and relevant, without dumbing down, to audience of different levels.

"SD: Romeo & Juliet" is about two young star-crossed lovers and their tragic end. Trapped by the feud between their families--the Montagues and the Capulets--their lives seem to tumble into an inevitable and ill-fated tragedy. The apparent “good” coming out of that “misadventured” is that they “bury their parents’ strife”.

SD shows are very popular among teachers, professors and students from secondary schools, colleges and universities, as these productions unveil the mystique of Shakespeare. Even working adults and parents have uttered, “SD shows have rekindled our interest in Shakespeare!”

In 2017, with its Macbeth KLSP performed a total of 40 shows in 7 states, 15 venues to over 6,000 pairs of eyes. While this year with Romeo & Juliet the company has traveled to Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, with close to 30 shows by September.

SD's work is further validated by international Shakespeare scholars and theatre practitioners, when it performed at the 3rd Biennial Conference of Asian Shakespeare Association in Manila in May 2018.

TRAVEL WITH MUM
presented by The Nonsensemaker
produced by DPAC

“Travel with Mum” is presented by The Nonsensemakers from Hong Kong and is one of the highlights for the 2016 DPAC Festival. Two years ago, it received high praise, plus private letters from audiences asking about the drama. This year, DPAC is proud to restage this passionate theatrical performance, "Travel with Mum."

“Travel with Mum” is beautifully told through a masked theatre play on the virtues of filial piety accompanied by folksy live music and inspired by the touching story of Wang Yi-Min who spent all his life with his mother in a village in Liaoning, China. The 74-year-old man takes his 99-year-old mother on a journey across China. Starting in Heilongjiang, they set off for Tibet on a 900-day journey that spans over 30, 000 kilometres.

His mother, who had toiled her entire life for her family, has never travelled out of her rural hometown. The man is determined to fulfil his mum’s wish to see the beauty of the world while she still can. Together, they travel on a rickety tricycle, pedalling through rural villages and fast-paced cities, valleys and over hills. As they ride on, he discovers that staying by his mum’s side is the greatest reward he can give to both of them.

I AM DEMON | VARNAM - EDIT
Project curated by Akane Nakamura, Helly Minarti, Lim How Ngean

1. “I Am A Demon”

Presented by: PICHET KLUNCHUN (Bangkok, Thailand)

Critically-acclaimed Pichet Klunchun contemporises his traditional training in Thai Khon performance in this deconstructed piece, “I Am A Demon”. It is a strong personal testimonial that expresses the tensions of traditional and contemporary body aesthetics while paying tribute to his traditional master, art form, and training. ."I Am Demon" presents an individual's fierce passion for his art, which also reveals the fragile human condition. It is rigorous and virtuosic as well as it is tender and lyrical.

Created in 2005 to commemorate the 3-year death anniversary of his beloved master, “I Am Demon” tells the story of passing down the art form from one generation to the next, as well as a relationship between master and student.

2. Varnam - Edit”

Presented by: PADMINI CHETTUR (Chennai, India), BHEDA ADITI SHARAD

Padmini Chettur has always incorporated her traditional training in Bharatnataym into her contemporary choreography. Her systematic deconstruction of the Bharatanatyam vocabulary, rhythm, and philosophy will resonate with Malaysian dancers and choreographers as another method to contemporize the Indian form. In “Varma II”, Chettur reworks an older work of hers with new musician collaborations and new choreographies.

The ‘Varnam’ in the traditional dance repertoire of Bharatanatyam occupies the central position of any performance. The opening lines of the Mohanaama Varnam drag us immediately and relentlessly into the heroine’s complex world through classical Indian dance. A story of lost love, abandonment and, pining, it is also, in its original interpretation, a glorified description of god’s divine love and lovemaking. In this work, which re-engages this iconic material and music, the dancers – some classically trained, others not – begin to unravel the meaning of the text, to re-physicalize the known language. Into the grid of the Varnam they invite references of contemporary text and their own personal voices of womanhood, body, and sexuality.

When was the last time your conscience spoke to you? Have you changed? Everything we do is a reflection of our choices; or are we simply doing what is expected of us? Even our choices are often influenced by others. How then do we define what is truly from our selves? An observation of the connections and reconnections between our thoughts and actions; and how we affect each other, unconsciously or with intention to manipulate.

ONE WAY TO SEE TAIWAN

Organized by Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC)

Supported by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia

Organized by the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) and supported by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, “One Way to See Taiwan” will kick off once again this October! DPAC will present 7 Taiwanese films for free at its theatre on October 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and 30, and fully welcomes the public to participate in this uniquely Taiwanese cultural journey!

Seeing the different aspects of Taiwan’s life experiences

Autumn in October—beautiful season, harvest season, golden season. In October, DPAC will select 7 Taiwanese films from the “Taiwan Cinema Toolkit” for a free screening (which comprises of 2 short films and 5 full length films), giving people the rare opportunity to enjoy Taiwanese films that have not seen official release at Malaysian cinemas.

Films capture moments, and these films undeniably capture life in Taiwan across various periods—offering vivid glimpses through a culturally-specific lens, never once shying away from thematic diversity. Taiwanese culture—whether in art, life, or otherwise—permeate in multi-faceted stories of sorrow and joy in the lives of migrant workers; life, death, and the hands of fate; Taiwan’s political history; homage, nostalgia, and romance; familial conflict and the paranormal; and grassroots culture and history.

Money and Honey 面包情人 - 15/10/2018Monday, 7:30PM

“Honey, I am away to make money, because No Money, No Honey!”

Money and Honey is an Asian documentary that spans thirteen years. It intimately portrays the lives of Filipino migrant workers and the elders they attend in a nursing home in Taipei. On this foreign island, the female caregivers look after the ageing residents. In the flow of life, stories of joy and sorrow take place. The caregivers comfort themselves by singing “No money, no honey”. What’s the price they pay for love and bread? Will their dreams ever come true? In longing do we taste the flavor of money and honey? Money and Honey also records the development of a unique female friendship, as the director became a messenger whose camera relayed the feelings and thoughts of the migrant workers and their families to each other.

Connection by Fate 超级公民 - 16/10/2018Tuesday, 7:30PM

A-Te used to be a social movement fanatic. But after suffering the pain of divorce and the death of his child, he changed his profession and became a taxi driver. Ma Le, a young aboriginal man, came to Taipei alone to earn a living on construction sites. However, unable to bear the exploitation, and in a rage, Ma Le accidentally killed a site superintendent and was sentenced to death. A-Te gave Ma Le a ride in his taxi on the night that Ma Le committed the killing and their two fates were thereafter intertwined. Director WAN Jen demonstrates a more philosophical and sympathetic approach facing life and death through the interaction and dialectic between the dead and living characters, and between a Han and an aboriginal. As politics becomes a manipulative and utilitarian power struggle with reality, the pure idealistic spirit, which attracted the devotion of many young souls, seems to gradually sink into desperation and despair, and in the end, death is the only option.

The film narrates the political history of Taiwan over a period of 50 years, following the imposition of martial law in 1947 and ‘The White Terror.’ Suspected of being a leftist, KO spent around 30 years in prison and institutions, always obsessively worrying about the fate of his best friend CHEN executed in the 1950s. Their friendship and CHEN’s fate is chronicled in flashback. Soon after his release, KO goes in search of the truth and a part of himself. Only when he learns the truth is he able to pay his respects. The intense and sad film depicts the mind of KO as he wanders back and forth through time and space, history and the city, memory and reality. Using an idealistic political prisoner from the 50s to form a poignant contrast with the corrupt politicians of the 90s, Director WAN thrusts the motifs of “introspection” and “redemption” to the poetic summit using thick and heavy brush strokes, resulting in a great artistic achievement.

Forever Love pays tribute to Taiwan’s local film industry in the 1960s when Taiwanese dialect films were cheap, stars were gods, and spies, giant monsters, and flying swordsmen crossed paths every day during lunch. In the summer of 1969, LIU, a top screenwriter is capable of cranking out multiple scripts at a time. But he is sick of writing the Spy No. 7 movie series for egotistic superstar WAN Bao-Long. But his grumpy shell is cracked when he meets star-struck Mei-Yue trying to sneak backstage at a premiere. Falling head over heels in love, he casts her in the upcoming Spy No. 7 sequel. This decision leads to a bittersweet romance spanning decades. Told in sweetly-campy flashbacks and semi-animated inserts, this nostalgic comedy set during the heyday of Taiwanese language cinema is a love letter to Taiwan’s history as much as it is a romance for the ages.

A Piece of Cake

This exquisite black-and-white animated short poignantly explores a personal family story in an innovative fashion, and casts a nostalgic gaze at Taiwanese grassroots culture and history. David, a high school student in Taipei, has to finish a school assignment, which requires the students to conduct an oral interview with a senior family member. All his relatives live in the countryside far away from the city. Therefore, he urges his father to give him a ride to his grandfather’s. The two travel from the bustling city to a scenic small town in a rural area. While revisiting his hometown and childhood, his son’s simple assignment unexpectedly brings back precious memories, complex family history, and torrential fears for the father.

The teacher at an aboriginal primary school nestled in the mountains gives the students a weekend assignment for which the students must try and find out “what millet is really like.” After all, it is traditional food that children should know all about. Badu goes home and asks the adults where the millet fields are, and they tell him there haven’t been any millet fields for ages. He then takes his best friend with him on a search deep into the mountain wilderness. On Monday, Badu’s classmates turn in their work. One has handed in a bottle of millet wine, another has written a poem about millet, and only Badu has nothing to show for his efforts. But Badu’s grandmother comes running over to the school to tell him she has planted millet seeds, and next year when the winds come she will take his class to see the millet.

A-Chuan is a quiet thirty-year old who works as a chef in a Japanese restaurant in Taiwan. One day, without apparent reason, he falls into a coma, and wakes up in a strange mental state. As if under a spell, he doesn’t respond to any external stimulus, and doesn’t speak or eat. He is taken back to the mountains, the place where his father lives and grows orchids. His father and sisters are puzzled—until violence explodes within and around A-Chuan, setting off a series of unexpected events. A fascinating and chilling psychological thriller of demonic possession and the mysterious happenings surrounding it, Soul probes a father-son relationship shattered by a foreign presence and unspoken family secrets.

Rossini's Heart and Soul
presented by The Song Weavers

Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) is an Italian composer and his music is known for his bel-canto vocal style for which had been recognized by many classical vocal practitioners as a standard repertory for both novice and mature vocalists to training their voices and to build vocal techniques. Rossini has composed various genres of music and has influenced many composers after him. Some famous examples of Rossini's legacy can be seen in Franz Liszt's transcriptions, popularizing Rossini's music even more during his lifetime.

Our concert will feature both Rossini's vocal and piano works including the complete Les soirées musicales (1830–1835), selections from Péchés de vieillesse (1857-1868), Rossini-Liszt's transcriptions, choral works including the sacred work La Fede, La Speranza, La Carità, and some non-sacred works including Il Carnevale di Venezia; as well as two newly arranged Rossini-Chee Yean transcriptions of Rossini’s works, as one of the highlights of our concert.

LILI OF CHINI
presented by TUNAS TARI

A long time ago, an ancient Khmer Kingdom spanned across South East Asia into the Malay Peninsula including Pahang.  The Kingdom was prosperous; its citizens lived happily and peacefully under the King’s rule. The King had two princesses, and chose the younger daughter, Lili, to rule the southern part of his Kingdom.

Lili’s new palace was on the banks of Tasik Chini lake, where she rooted a rare lotus flower, bestowed by her father, to commemorate her reign.  The blossom signified peace, harmony and tranquillity of her governance of the south.

However, driven by envy towards her younger sister, the elder princess, Lala, decided to uproot the sacred lotus and removed it away from the lake into the deep forest.  Havoc ensued the moment Lili’s flower was displaced, disturbing the ecological balance of the lake where water levels started to rise at an alarming rate.  A mysterious creature with scales also began to appear amidst the rising water.

The Kingdom was in jeopardy of being immersed by water.  Lala’s ill will and defiance might cause her dearly as dragon scales began to creep over her own skin.  Could the 2 sisters find a way to overcome the disaster unfolding around them.

Writing poem is almost exclusively taken as serious in terms of its tone and content. Unlike most poet, Jia Ya’s poem is funny and written in sarcastic remarks. But like most of the poet too, he shoulder his responsibility to reveal the dark nuance of our society. Because director Choong Seong Wei and choreographer Pexstreet Liu decide to translate this into an experimental theatre, we are able to reaffirm that life is not just dull. Its also a box full of chocolate.

CONCERT PIERROT LUMIÈRE

A Multimedia Sound Performances by Manufaktur für aktuelle Musik & Warped Type (Visuals)

Presented by: Goethe Institut and DPAC

More than a hundred years later, the question who this Pierrot Lunaire, central figure of the work, actually was still lingers: A romantic, a lunatic? A man, a woman? A real person or just a projection? The German ensemble’s contemporary version of the Pierrot focuses on the ambivalence of the figure – in their rich stage performance the musicians follow the Pierrot through a network of different virtual spaces created by the video installation: uninhabited nature and urbanity, transit zones, open spaces and narrow alleys let the sceneries of the original story come to life.

Inspired by the radical new musical language Schönberg’s compositions unfolded in the beginning of the 20th century, MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik infuse their classical performance with electronic elements, building bridges to contemporary sounds and music styles.

About MAM

MAM. manufaktur für aktuelle musik was founded by International Ensemble Modern Academy scholarship holders in 2010, in response to a common passion for new forms of expression and performance in the music of today. The musicians see themselves as a liberal and internationally positioned collective, one that extends the idea of an ensemble through interdisciplinary engagement, bringing to life new sounds and sound concepts.

MAM works with composers such as Mark Andre, Georges Aperghis, Hans-Joachim Hespos, Robin Hoffmann, Neele Hülcker, Jagoda Szmytka and Simon Steen-Andersen, and maintains a performance schedule at festivals such as Eclat in Stuttgart, the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, AchtBrücken Festival and New Talents Biennale in Cologne, Mixtur Festival in Barcelona, Klangwerkstatt Berlin, pgnm Festival Bremen, klub katarakt festival Hamburg, Schönes Wochenende at Tonhalle Düsseldorf and ZKM Karlsruhe.

In 2012 the MAM musicians recorded Mauricio Kagel’s Exotica for DVD (Ensemble Modern Media) and in 2015, a CD of new works by Ying Wang for Wergo.

In addition to the cultivation of contemporary repertoire, the musicians are committed to the upkeep and extension of alternative and/or experimental playing techniques at the nexus of performance, improvisation and the interpretation of composed music. MAM is a place of experimentation, boundary crossing and improbable confluences.

GOLD RAIN & HAILSTONES
presented by The Instant Café Theatre Company

Gold Rain and Hailstones is a Malaysian classic by acclaimed playwright Jit Murad. It was first staged to critical acclaim in 1993, hailed as the best play of the year, moving audiences to laughter and then tears. This is the opening production to mark Instant Café’s 30th Anniversary.

Gold rain in another country. Hailstones in your country. Better hailstones at home

Sharifah Amani, Redza Minhat, Ghafir Akbar and Farah Rani star in a timely revival of a modern Malaysian classic.

Outspoken and liberal Amy had always felt like a mutant back in Malaysia. So when her best friends Nina, Jay and Man returned home after studying abroad Amy stayed on. But now Amy’s beloved Bapak is dying and she hurries home. Amy’s homecoming causes chaos as she annoys, infuriates and exasperates her old friends. As she reconnects with them, Amy soon discovers she is not the only one struggling to belong. Successful 'Melayu Baru' Man, feisty upper-class wife and mother Nina and fabulous celebrity make-up and beauty guru Jay have all made difficult choices and compromises to belong in their own country. But can they accept each other’s Malaysia? And can they learn to love the hailstones?

Gold Rain and Hailstones by Jit Murad is a hilarious and often poignant tale of home, identity, friendship and family.

Directed by Gavin Yap

Featuring Ghafir Akbar, Sharifah Amani, Redza Minhat, Farah Rani

Women's Adventure Film Tour 18/19
presented by Cosmiques Films

Celebrating the extraordinary things women are doing in the name of adventure.

Come and celebrate International Women’s Day with 12 of the best new short films featuring the most adventurous women on earth!

1. Hayley
Before walking a 52 meter highline at 2800 altitude in midst winter, I asked Hayley about fear. She replied with her favorite quote from Frank Herbert’s “Dune”. A short film about Hayley Ashburn, filmed in the Torri del Vajolet, set to the hypnotizing soundtrack Tristana by Nils Frahm.

2. Mothered by Mountains
Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita, Nepal’s leading female mountain guide, has been on top of the tallest peaks on Earth. When she teams up to make a first ascent with an unlikely partner – local punk-rock icon, Sareena Rai – they both find that the paths to the greatest summits lie within.

3. Persian Powder
Take a cultural journey with us as we profile professional snowboarder, Mona Seraji, plying her trade in her home mountains of Iran. Haunting music accompanies this unique glimpse into a little-known, winter playground for skiers and sliders alike.

4. Trial and Error
The sport of trials riding isn’t an easy one; it takes hard work and commitment, not to mention a large amount of skill. Janine will take you on a journey and show you how trials riding allows her to explore and enjoy the outdoors and spectacular locations that Queensland has to offer.

5.The Ascent
The Ascent is a documentary short following Alyssa Azar in the lead up to her third attempt to become the youngest Australian ever to summit Everest.

6. Why Not Now

At the age of 49, blind and afraid of water, Vivian Stancil dove in to save her life.

7. Nemesis

As a highly accomplished rock climber, Monique Forestier has completed some very difficult climbs around the world and along the way she became the first Australian woman to climb routes graded 31, 32, 33 and 34. To put that into perspective, the top grade climbed by an Australian male is 35. NEMESIS shows the determination and perseverance required to succeed at the top end of rock climbing on a project that pushed Monique to her limit.

8. Discovering Adventure
Discovering Adventure is a film project documenting a 5-year old girl, Isabelle, traveling with her family to Norway on her biggest adventure yet. Along the way she’s learning the skills to be an explorer and adventurer, but most importantly she’s learning about herself. With her father Tim who’s also a professional paragliding pilot, and down-to-earth mom, Maile, the family set sail into the Arctic Circle in search of a winter wonderland to sail, fly, camp, ski and explore together. Isabelle’s love of adventure has already taken her all over the world sailing in Croatia, tandem wake boarding in California, paragliding in France and winter Sky Camping above Europe’s highest ski station, Val Thorens. Who know where she will go next. Join the Green family as they continue to discovering adventure together!

9. Threads from Mongolia
Threads from Mongolia follows thirteen women as they explore Western Mongolia. Encounters with eagle hunters, ancient petroglyphs and a glimpse into the lives of nomadic families, Threads from Mongolia weaves female camaraderie, poetry by Claire Carter and music from local performers into a beautiful love letter to a wild place.

10. Breaking the Cycle: Greenland

Australian expedition cyclist Dr. Kate Leeming travels through Northeast Greenland to test a custom made Christini all-wheel-drive fat bike in polar conditions. Kate aims to make the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole.

11. Taranaki
Janina Kuzma, Anna Segal and Evelina Nilsson travel to the North Island of New Zealand with a goal to summit and ski all four skiable volcanic peaks in the region. The original objectives become out of reach due to foul conditions, but as the weather window shrinks, Mt Taranaki only expands in their minds – not just a land mass, but a mountain with a temperament and soul.

12. 3 Women and 3 Old Men
‘Three women and the three old men’ is a story of three women’s journey to climb three of Scotland’s remote sea stacks in just three days to raise money for a local charity who provide opportunities for disadvantaged youths in climbing.

The Story of Cyrano de Bergerac
presented by Le French Festival & KL Shakespeare Players

supported by Alliance Française KL, Embassy of France in Malaysia

Paris, 1640. Never shying away from blood or fools, full of panache and a smooth talker, skilled swordsman yet soulful poet Cyrano de Bergerac is not so daring when it comes to love, as the shockingly large nose defiling his face prevents him from courting the beautiful Roxane, the love of his life.

For the first time in its history, Le French Festival partners with KL Shakespeare Players -one of Malaysia’s greatest theatre companies - to produce The Story of Cyrano de Bergerac, a French theatrical masterpiece written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand.

KLSP’s unique French-Malaysian version of Cyrano is bound to sweep the audience off their feet and take them on a lyrical journey like no other, performing key scenes of this classical play in contemporary English with a hint of French.

The Instant Café Theatre Company presents

THE MAY 9 SHOW

As the country celebrates, debates and bemoans the anniversary of May 9th Instant Café asks

WHO WANTS TO MAKE MALAYSIA GREAT AGAIN?

To find out, join YBeeee & Curry Spice live with host Sean Ghazi on
Instant Café Night Live – the Talk Show we all actually want to see in Malaysia Baru.

Instant Cafe Breaking News In Your Face.

Exactly one year ago Malaysia made history by voting out the old and, well, voting in the even older. Hooray! And exactly one year later Malaysia will see history being made again: It’s a brand new Instant Cafe Show! That’s right, Instant Cafe is back to answer today’s burning questions like, why do we still have a Sedition Act, why persecute women for marching, where did I put my glasses, I mean, they were right here, and does this curry taste “fishy” to you as well?

The Talk Show Everyone Is Talking About

Yes, Instant Cafe is back with its very own “It’s Never Too Late, Late Talk Show” with the host, Malaysia’s West End singing sensation SEAN GHAZI and two very special guests:

He’s Malaysian Official 63, he may have lost the last election but he didn’t lose HIS equanimity, he’ll dress up as a dog and attack his own lawyer if he has to, he’s the only former Deputy Minister whose name you can still remember: He’s YBeeee! And he wants to Make Malaysia Great For Him Again (MMGFHA) #smallbossku.

AND

She’s the only member of her own girl band “The Asian Spice Girls”, she’s the star of “Keeping Up With The Coomarasamys”, she spent two weeks in London so she’s all, like, “in your face” and “know what I mean” and she plans to be the next Prime Minister of Malaysia. That’s right, she’s the bi-sexual, bi-pedal, bi-nocular woman from Sentul – Curry Spice! #inikarilah #innit

ALSO

You won’t want to miss the Surprise Celebrity Mystery Guests* AND the celebrity Guest Singers!

So be sure to join velvety smooth Sean Ghazi and his Special Guests as they look at Malaysia’s triumphs, the glories, the heartaches and the comedy, as well as asking the question, when was the last time you said Malaysia Baru?

Created by Jo Kukathas with Kam Raslan, Na’a Murad, Zalfian Fuzi and Sean Ghazi

Featuring Jo Kukathas, Sean Ghazi, Guest Singers and Surprise Celebrity Mystery Guests*

*Different Surprise Celebrity Mystery Guests will appear every night – ranging from politicians to civil society leaders. A detailed calendar will be out soon.

Sara Heng Guzheng Recital
presented by SARA HENG

Guzheng—an ancient Chinese traditional instrument with a history of more than 2500 years—is still one of the most popular and influential instruments today. This show will be presented by Sara Heng, a Master’s graduate from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, along with guest artists Jimmy Chong (Drums), Sylvester Liew (Piano), Jia Xi Lee (Dancer) and visual designer Max Jala. This show will explore the sparks between different art forms as well as the contrasts and similarities between traditional and contemporary music!
